Welcome to Breast Cancer Association of Queensland home page..

Breast Cancer Association of Queensland exists to improve the quality of life for women with breast cancer and their families in Australia. Every year in Australia approximately 13 000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Breast Cancer Association of Queensland's main focus has been to provide breast care services to women and their families in rural Queensland. Initiatives include the training and placing of support breast care nurses in Longreach, Mitchell and Emerald. Annual seminars in regional areas help to raise awareness in the community of the importance of regular examinations. We also produce Resource Directories and post-operative exercise DVD's free of charge to breast cancer sufferers. BCAQ have also invested substantially into various research programs in Brisbane.

The boardmembers of the BCAQ are all volunteers, who invest substantial amounts of time and energy into organising fund raising events, and ensure that all funds raised at our events and monies received through private donations is invested in the most effective programs.

During the 2007-2008 financial year we have funded; nurses for further studies in Breast Care via the Distance Education program at La Trobe University, as mentioned above we currently fund four nurses to provide support and breast care services in regional Queensland. We provided a research grant to Queensland Institute of Medical Research for Dr Geoffrey Beadle's project that will look at long term survivors of breast cancer. For the 2008-2009 financial year our board plan to continue to expand the Breast Care Nurse program, provide financial assistance for rural women with the costs associated with travel and expenses relating to breast cancer, we support the Qld Cancer Council for the 2009 Reach for Recovery Cancer Conference to be held in May 2009.

We are proud to announce that we now have three new sub-committees, one in Charleville, Mitchell plus Barcaldine. Thank you to Julia Leeds, Jenny Hockey and Vivette White for their help in establishing these subcommittees.

Breast Cancer Association of Queensland urges women to conduct regular breast self-examinations. Seek help and support if you are diagnosed with breast cancer and always speak to your Doctor if you have any concerns.

Rural Nurses interested in undertaking further studies in Breast Cancer via Distance Education, are encouraged to send an expression of interest to our office, scholarships are available to do a single unit via La Trobe University.
